Welcome to Graz

Audio Mostly

Audio Mostly is an interdisciplinary conference on design and experience of interaction with sound that prides itself on embracing applied theory and reflective practice. Its annual gatherings bring together thinkers and doers from academia and industry that share an interest in sonic interaction and the use of audio for interface design. This remit covers product design, auditory display, computer games and virtual environments, new musical instruments, and education and workplace tools. It further includes fields such as the psychology of sound and music, cultural studies, system engineering, and everything in between in which sonic interaction plays a role.

AM'20 called for Papers, Demos, Workshops, and Music & Installations on extended realities. Attendees will expect a full program including 2.5 days of paper, poster and demo sessions, two concerts, and an exhibition on "Extended Sound design". The day before the conference, workshops will take place at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM).

The 2020 conference highlights audio in extended realities, contrary to the common acceptation of augmented reality or virtual reality that refer to mainly visual systems. We envisage covering this topic from a variety of viewpoints: from design (HCI, sonic interaction design and sonification) over engineering (signal processing, spatial audio) to music and fine arts (composition; artistic research). AM'20 will mostly focus on sound and explore the interaction between audio and extended realities.

Virtual Participation

Meeting the current challenges of COVID-19, AM'20 calls for virtual participation. All accepted papers are to be presented and discussed via video live stream to/with registered participants and will be part of the proceedings.

The conference portal will be online from September 08. All videos of paper, poster and demo presentations can then be viewed on demand for those who prefer not watching consecutively within the conference schedule.

We are exploring new concepts for virtual exchange - including the concerts and installations - and are sure that participating at AM'20 will be a lively, enriching experience.

Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM)

The conference is organised by Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM). IEM is one of the leading institutions in the field of audio engineering and computer music. As part of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, IEM is a multidisciplinary institution, whose general mission is to bridge the gap between science and the arts. As a unique characteristic, IEM focuses on sonification and sonic interaction design as part of its research in computer music. IEM facilities include laboratories and performance spaces such as CUBE, which are equipped with spatial audio and motion tracking systems.
